In 2015, Aubrey began her journey somewhere on the big blue, and her adventure began on a 33-foot power boat with her two kids, Bianca and Blake. At a point, she became aware of the limitations of travel in a power vessel and upgraded her plan to that of the sailboat variety.
In 2016, Rick More of Sophisticated Lady supported Aubrey, and then she received her captain’s license, and her dream of sailing became a reality. Today, Aubrey is working on SV Private Ship, a 1977 Formosa 51 Ketch. Together with her support team, they are restoring it to its former glory.
Career beginnings and present life
Aubrey Gail Wilson, a well known sailing YouTube star, grew up in the valley of California in a small farm town, and by my mid-twenties she was ready for a change. Aubrey moved to their father’s hometown in Los Angeles to raise her daughter and enjoy a change of scenery.
Following a short modelling career, Aubrey found a love for being behind the camera and opened a portrait studio in California. Within five years, Aubrey got the itch to see something new again and moved to Austin, Texas, in 2013, where she met a man who introduced her to the idea of living on a boat.
In the Summer of 2015, Aubrey packed up the kids and moved onto a small power boat that was set to leave from Kemah, Texas, bound for Florida and then ultimately to the Bahamas to search for treasure. Rob was a huge history buff and loved researching the history of the Spanish Galleons, which was like the adventure of a lifetime.
The two became scuba certified and started studying weather patterns sold and almost everything they owned pac; they skied into a tiny 2003 Cruisers Yacht and set out to sea with zero experience. The duo were on a journey of hope, a dream, and a prayer.
After a year of living on the 33-foot cruiser yacht, the two made their way from port to port and fell in love with a tall ship. It didn’t take long before Aubrey got the itch to learn how to sail and travel around the world by the wind without having to buy fuel. It was an interesting proposition.
In the spring of 2016, nearly a year after moving aboard, the two bought our first sailboat, Miss Lone Star, a 1994 405 Beneteau purchased from a maritime institute in the northeast of the United States for $70,000 USD.
When the relationship didn’t work out, she set out to become the best sailor and became a USCG captain. Since then, Aubrey has owned several sailboats and has been buying, fixing and selling them to fund her adventures. In 2020, Aubrey’s Pirate Ship dreams come true, and she purchased a 1977 Formosa 51. After completing a massive refit that included all new spars and rigging, Aubrey set sail in 2022 from Puget Sound, Washington, to Mexico and beyond (nailed it).
Aubrey has developed experiences, including sailing with a monkey in Africa, swimming with great white sharks, and buying and fixing a boat.
