Erik Aanderaa bio

Erik Aanderaa bio

Erik Martin Aanderaa has been sailing since 1993, starting at 11, and instantly fell completely in love with it. Aanderaa learned early on that sailing singlehanded gave him the freedom he needed to be able to sail wherever, whenever- without being dependent on a crew. So, with the years, Aanderaa got better at overcoming the challenges solo sailing creates.

At 20, Aanderaa started as a first officer on different offshore supply ships around the North Sea and got to learn the oceans well, and it really triggered his passion for ocean sailing- spending all the hours on the bridge looking at the sea. At 24, Aanderaa got a hold of my dreamboat, a Contessa 35 from 1976, the start of an incredible, long-lasting adventure. In 2007, Aanderaa sailed her alone all the way from Norway to Spain on a somewhat spontaneous trip.

Aanderaa experienced so many incredible moments along the way, but being alone, he couldn’t share those moments with anyone. Some years later, in 2016, cameras, drones, and editing software became affordable, and Aanderaa started documenting sailing trips online. And before Aanderaa knew it, his “No Bullshit Just Sailing” YouTube channel was a fact and has become what viewers know it today.

“Tessie” is a Contessa 76 built in 1976 in Lymington, Southampton, by the well-known Jeremy Rogers.

Tessie is a sharp, fast, and incredibly steady boat to sail in all conditions. Erik bought her in 2004 and has used the last 17 years to slowly equip her for offshore singlehanded sailing in heavy conditions, with the aim of getting safely across the big oceans. It has Hydrovane self-steering fitted together with a full Raymarine navigation outfit with a strong autopilot.

Also, there are Infrared cameras in the mast top and cockpit to be monitored from the bunk inside the cabin while resting. Solar panels, twin-engine alternators, and a hydro generator to charge 3x 100 Ah of Lithium batteries assist a lot.

Early Life and Career

Erik has a Contessa 35 and keeps constantly upgrading his boat, with some notable equipment like a new 1500W inverter, New Chartplotter and radar detector, Webasto 4Kw diesel heater, New Volvo Penta DE-40 engine, and engine batteries. Also, he owns a Nespresso coffee machine on board his boat.

  • Crew Members

Erik Aanderaa from Denmark is the crew member. The channel focuses a lot on sailing (mainly in rough conditions) rather than boat work or repairs.

  • Location

Erik mostly sails in Iceland, and in recent times, Erik Aanderaa has opted to only produce 1 video per month to maintain his high-quality content with a ‘no bullshit, just sailing’ philosophy. Also, he avoids all the click-bait drama and controversies of other channels.

He has explored the Mediterranean, North Sea, and the North Atlantic Sea and has also been a crew member in multiple yacht races.

Erik Aanderaa mentions he knows the waters he’s entering and his limitations. Still, he considers the situation dangerous and can easily take a very bad turn. Erik Aanderaa doesn’t encourage anyone to try this. Rather, if someone is willing to do it, one must do it at your own risk. Storms are dangerous.

Collaborations

We do not have any strong information regarding whether Erik had collaborated with other sailing YouTubers or not. However, on June 28, 2023, Erik Aanderaa posted on his Instagram that he had a blast together with Silje, Sailing Uma and Sam Holmes Sailing at The Ocean Race in Genova, Italy. He was overjoyed to have seen the boats cross the Finnish line while they participated in the Legends Race.

Norwegian solo skipper Erik Aanderaa has spent years slowly increasing his experience of sailing in heavy weather, crossing the North Sea in the middle of winter aboard his Contessa 35, Tessie. He does this to test his ability, the boat, and his equipment, which will be invaluable when he sails to Greenland in July.

Like many offshore singlehanded sailors, Aanderaa always wishes to know how his boat will handle different conditions and make sure his seamanship skills are as honed before any big adventure.

The legendary Jean-Luc Van den Heede used a similar strategy ahead of the 2018-19 Golden Globe Race, Aanderaa started sailing when he was 11. He had asked his father for a small motorized dinghy but instead received an 11ft sailing dinghy, similar to an Optimist, and he regularly sailed in the inshore waters of Haugesund on Norway’s west coast.

Erik mentions that he was very negative to start with, but after some trying and failing, he got to grips with sailing and one day sailed away without knowing how to get back. Aanderaa got further and further out. Aanderaa’s dad had to come and get him with the neighbor’s boat. From that moment, Aanderaa knew sailing was his thing, and he became addicted.

At 14, Aanderaa progressed to a 15ft Mørebas Duett, which got him learning sailing in stronger winds and got him even more obsessed.

Aanderaa tried the Duett once or twice a little offshore, and that probably triggered much of my sense of adventure,’ noted Aanderaa.

Aanderaa’s passion also extended to his career choice. After leaving school, he became an apprentice on a cargo vessel. Aanderaa’s wage was soon put to good use, buying a 22ft Maxi 68, which gave him the freedom to go further afield.

At 22, Aanderaa accepted the position of first officer on a North Sea supply ship. The extra income allowed him to start looking for a new yacht.

Aanderaa saw an advert for a 1976 Doug Peterson-designed Contessa 35, which Jeremy Rogers had built in Lymington.

It was Heavily built, with a deep cockpit, manageable sail plan, and short distances on deck, and it became love at first sight. Aanderaa bought Tessie on the spot.

In 2006-07, Aanderaa sailed Tessie solo from Norway to Malaga just to see how the boat and he worked together.

Erik carries enough safety equipment for evacuation and survival until rescue. Aanderaa has always dreamt about winter sailing in the North Sea. Everyone said it was dangerous and that only stupid people would try it. Besides, he was told he would put the lives of rescue crews at risk. But Aanderaa knew this was coming from people without proper experience.

Aanderaa continued sailing Tessie off the west coast of Norway, which helped him develop heavy weather tactics.

Aanderaa mentions that it wasn’t all plain sailing. In 2011, Aanderaa ran aground on rocks outside Haugesund while sailing in sub-zero conditions, severely damaging the rudder. Aanderaa had been wearing cotton gloves, which, once wet, failed to keep his hands warm.
