The family was accepted into Canada as refugees later after settling in Calgary. When she was a child, her father kept telling her that institutions, including the justice system, police, and government, couldn’t be trusted.
Wang discovered that, in Canada, people have constitutionally protected rights to a fair trial, meaning publicly funded legal representation. She believed regardless of one’s financial status, everyone has the right to justice, a fair trial, and a right to access.
